Some remarks on Student Project Reports

Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs.
Henry Ford

I have recently corrected four student project reports (3x by bachelor and 1x by master students).

When I remember my time as a student (in psychology) — waow, we had little if any instruction in academic writing. These students did not have that much prior instruction either. I mean, they are studying media computer science (or media informatics) and are concerned with user centered development of applications. So it is no wonder that the reports do have some room to improve. Then again, my education in scientific writing was eclectic as well, and I am correcting reports of another discipline.

So, in an attempt to clarify what I want from the students, I sat down after work and wrote down what I expect from these reports (and bachelor/master theses in general). And I also wrote down a few tips on academic/technical writing (link to PDF).

I’m not sure about it yet. It might be useful for students of media computer science (media informatics, “Medieninformatik”). Unfortunately, I did write it in German, but if you have some feedback, I’d love to hear it.

In any case, it was fun to write something “just-for-fun” again. 🙂

Update: Some slight edits after posting. As usual, you see the issues when it’s online. 😉
