Looking back at three great games of 2014

Moving beyond the classics of GOG.com (see yesterday’s posting), here are the three best games I have played in 2014. All for PS4 (but also for other platforms), because that’s what I have at the moment.

Tomb Raider (Remastered)

The reboot of the Tomb Raider series. You participate in an expedition and get stranded on a remote island no-one has escaped for centuries. Beautiful story and great over-the-shoulder-look gameplay. I loved the rather linear gameplay which nevertheless allowed me to revisit past environments.

The Last of Us (Remastered)

Perhaps the best writing I have ever seen in any game. A fungus infection that turns humans into zombies has overrun the earth … 20 years ago. You live in a quarantine zone and are asked to escort a teenager to a resistance clinic where an antidote could be developed. Again an over-the-shoulder game, but with incredibly heartbreaking scenes that show the best and worst humans are capable of.

Far Cry 4

Returning the ashes of your mother to her (and your) place of birth, you get involved in a bloody civil war. Incredible landscapes, good writing, situations where you have to confront that sometimes, there are no good decisions. Not to mention the asshole wildlife (see here, here, and here). I’m usually not a fan of open-world-games, but I got to love Far Cry 4.

So, these were my favorite games of 2014. What were yours?
