In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
Desiderius Erasmus
Let’s face it, if you are an academician, chances are, the view of your colleagues regarding people operating outside of the ivory tower is pretty dim. People leaving the ivory tower are “failures”, they were “not good enough”, are “quitters”, or “don’t know what they are missing”. Strangely enough, few academicians who make these statements have any idea of work outside academia.
Well, if you want to know what you are missing outside of academia — and want to open at least one eye to it — I can highly recommend the three podcasts: “Escape the Ivory Tower” by UniversityAffairs.ca:
- Episode 1 of Escape the Ivory Tower: from prof to project officer
- Episode 2 of Escape the Ivory Tower: tips for grad students
- Episode 3 of Escape the Ivory Tower: the ever-changing job market
So, how about opening one eye? You might like what you see. 😉
