I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed why the left has such a hard time accepting the massacre end of 2023 in Israel. The tenor was, that they believe in reason and cannot understand evil.
I think there is something to be said for that analysis. If you are looking for peaceful solutions, look for the best in humanity, strive for the better angels of our nature, it is hard to accept that some things are just evil. It just does not compute with today’s brains. Well, at least not until people get seriously «mugged by reality».
Because with evil you cannot reason. But, as someone put it, you can prepare for it.
