Alcoholism and Spiritual Transformations

«The funny thing is, if you’re trying to stop drinking you need something better than alcohol, and alcohol is pretty good. So you better find something a lot better.»
Jordan Peterson

Recently someone (not Peterson, but the quote fits) mentioned that people need a spiritual transformation to quit being an alcoholic. I think the person meant it in a religious sense. I’m doubtful of that assertion, but I wonder, does it have to a religious experience like being born again? Or joining an AA group?

Or perhaps what is missing in meaning.

Meaning in these sense of something that puts life into context, give you something to live for, to strive for?

I don’t know, but if that works, that might actually be … somewhat more accessible.
