Listening to differening opinions

If in the last few years you haven’t discarded a major opinion or acquired a new one, check your pulse. You may be dead.

I recently stumbled upon a couple of great videos on YouTube. Great in the sense that they make me think. It’s not the videos by Karen Straughan, Victor Zen, and others I have recommended before, but people that would usually be of no interest to me. Not only are they British (and I’m not, well, Shakespeare was British and he did write some good stuff, so did Rowling, but they mostly talk/write about contemporary British politics), but they also associate with a political position I do not identify with. But still, the way they argue and the points they make … interesting.

And that’s the nice thing about the Internet. There are a lot of explicit (whom to follow or subscribe to) and implicit/subtle processes (filter bubble) at work here, but there’s also this opportunity to listen in on other people’s thoughts and words. And in the end, you might find out that they make sense (or have some worthwhile qualities), even if you might have never thought so.

So, here are a few of these videos:

Part 2:

Part 5

Part 6

Highly recommended.

  1. I stumbled upon your blog thanks to a post on Facebook by a good friend. I like the pot pourri of topics here. There is always something one is not aware of. That I think helps to widen one’s horizon.

“The heterogeneity of the postings can make reading this blog a bit cumbersome” you say. I wd say ‘interesting’ not ‘cumbersome’!

Thanks for taking time to share what you have with us all.

  2. Hmm, that’s an interesting perspective — thank you, I appreciate the positive feedback. 🙂 Makes me feel better when I jump from topic to topic to keep things “interesting”. 🙂
